Key features include JobLink, described as "the premier online job listing service for the field of landscape architecture", and FirmFinder, a facility where the public can find details of ASLA-registered landscape architects. Association for Preservation Technology International (APT)
 http://www.apti.org/

According to the site, "the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) is the premier cross-disciplinary organisation dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. US-based but with members in more than thirty countries, APT connects a network of architects, conservators, tradespeople, consultants, planners, curators, landscape architects, engineers, developers, educators, engineers, historians, apprentices and students". The site contains the information you would expect, including up-to-date details of publications, conferences, membership and local Chapters (branches), plus a useful 'Resources' section with reports, archives and a page of (mainly US and Canada-related) preservation links. Meanwhile, the appearance and legibility of the site is vastly improved following a recent redesign. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].

Association of Gardens Trusts
 http://www.gardenstrusts.org.uk/

The Association of Gardens Trusts is a UK national organisation representing the growing number of County Gardens Trusts that are actively engaged in conserving, researching, documenting and caring for the country's heritage of parks, gardens and designed landscapes. The site is a comprehensive resource, with sections covering (among other things) community activities, education, useful publications, and details of County Gardens Trusts. There is also an up-to-date events listing, and a helpful section of links to related organisations. However, a more consistent interface would improve the site's navigation and legibility - at the moment almost every page uses a different format. [GAS, 7 Nov 2006].

The Countryside Agency
 http://www.countryside.gov.uk/

The Countryside Agency (formed in 1999 from the merger of the Countryside Commission and Rural Development Commission) works to achieve the best for the English countryside through conservation, research, and influencing central and local government. Features of the Agency's site include an up-to-date 'press centre'; coverage of its work and projects, including the Landscape Access and Recreation and Commission for Rural Communities divisions; and details of publications. Recently redesigned, the site is quite attractive; however, the revised menu layout lacks the clarity of the old (Sapling Commendation-winning) site, its confusing format and choice of headings making it quite hard to locate specific information. The site is organised broadly into sections covering 'your environment', 'business and industry', 'science and research' and 'jobs', with additional sections covering regional issues, and specific topics such as air quality, flood and waste. Overall, this is a nice looking site, offering access to a wide variety of environmental information, tools, resources and features. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 23 Jan 2006].

The Flower Council of Holland
 http://www.flowercouncil.org/uk/

The Flower Council of Holland is the worldwide marketing arm of the cut flower and houseplant industry of the Netherlands. This is big business, as in the UK alone the cut flower market is worth a staggering 2.2 billion (the UK music industry is only worth 2 billion). The Flower Council is financed by a mandatory levy to which all sectors of the trade in Holland contribute. The site's content is primarily aimed at the international floral industry (florists, garden centres, supermarkets, plant retailers and wholesalers, DIYers, etc.) and horticultural media, but the trends illustrated also have an impact on the wider fields of garden design and landscaping. The site actually has a lot of useful and interesting content, which is hidden away due to the poor navigational structure; however, if you use the sitemap then all will be revealed. Sections cover Cultivation, Logistics, Facts & Figures (archived by year), News & Newsletters, Fashions & Trends (archived by year), and Promotional Ideas & Techniques. All in all it's a very slick multi billion pound Dutch industry that dictates trends and fashions to the world. [RB, 25 Aug 2006].

Forestry Commission of Great Britain
 http://www.forestry.gov.uk/

The Forestry Commission of Great Britain is the government agency responsible for the protection and expansion of Britain's forests and woodlands. The redesigned home page is unfortunately rather complicated, with a lack of hierarchy making it difficult to read the site's structure; 'Communities', 'Consultations', 'Learning', 'Research', 'Sustainable development' and 'Working in forestry' are among the areas covered by the site, together with dedicated sections for England, Scotland and Wales. News stories and a library section (featuring facts, figures, publications, and a very good links section) are also provided, while a clickable map allows users to find details of places to visit in their area. The site includes the information you would expect about membership and activities, together with many other useful features such as excepts of book reviews, details of publications and an excellent page of annotated links. Recently redesigned, the site now boasts a neat and modern appearance, with a very clear and intuitive system of menus. [GAS, 19 Jun 2006].

The site is small but elegantly designed, with features including a list of the Group's publications and journals, information about membership, a useful page of links, and an interesting case studies section. IEMA was formed in September 1999, following the merger of the Institute of Environmental Management, the Environmental Auditor's Registration Association, and the Institute of Environmental Assessment. Today, the Institute is a leading UK membership organisation dedicated to the promotion of the goal of sustainable development and to the professional development of individuals involved in environmental management and assessment - whether in business, government, consultancy or the regulators. This nicely designed site includes sections on membership, training, events and regions, plus a useful publications section, with documents available to download in PDF format. Elsewhere, the site includes information about CEAM (Centre for Environmental Assessment and Management), the research and project execution arm of the IEMA, with many downloadable reports. International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS)
 http://www.iaps-association.org/

IAPS "works to facilitate communication on the relationships between people and their physical environment", and describes itself as "the forum for scholars who have an interest in an interdisciplinary exchange and in the study of the transactions and interrelationships between people and their socio-physical surroundings (including built and natural environments) and the relation of this field to other social and biological sciences and to the environmental professions" - thus, members of IAPS represent a diversity of professions, including architects, city and regional planners, landscape architects, interior designers and psychologists. Features of the site include the history, aims and objectives of IAPS; background on the notion of 'people-environment studies'; details of the association's boards, networks and members; news, events and publications; and a useful page of links. Though the design and navigation of the site is generally good, the main text throughout the site is too small to read comfortably. [GAS, 16 Sep 2006].

International Association of Topiary Growers and Suppliers
 http://www.topiary.org.uk/

Formed in 2004, the UK-based International Association of Topiary Growers and Suppliers describes itself as "a non-profit making organisation [whose] directories are compiled of reputable and researched suppliers of quality topiary, topiary frames and baytrees, serving both trade and the public." The highlight of the Association's website - Topiary.org.uk - is its 'topiary resources' section, including the history of topiary, and a list of UK topiary gardens, organised by county. The site's overall layout is quite nice, though some of the punctuation and formatting is a little odd - as the site grows, greater attention to detail will hopefully smooth out these glitches. International City Planners Network (ICPN)
 http://www.city-planners-network.org/

Founded in 2004, the goal of the International City Planners Network (ICPN) is to "help practicing planners develop and implement creative solutions to real-world planning problems by facilitating contacts with planners throughout the world". However, the Network welcomes all types of planners and people interested in planning, including urban designers, architects, landscape architects, social service planners, open space planners, economic development planners, environmental planners, infrastructure and transportation planners. From its home page onwards, the Network's sense of friendliness successfully pervades its website, with the display of a random member's photograph on the front page adding a personal touch. Once inside, visitors can use the 'Find a Planner' function, view a series of sections designed to help travelling planners learn more about specific featured cities (currently Paris, San Francsico, Vienna and Zurich) or browse a list of upcoming conferences. The home page also includes an excellent list of links to planning-related organisations and journals. [GAS, 8 Jul 2006].

The site features information about the Network, membership and activities, plus articles from its newsletter, a gallery, and links to members' sites. An excellent list of other art and landscape related sites is also provided. Manitobawildlands.org
 http://www.manitobawildlands.org/

According to the site, its purpose is to "support the public policy goal of protected areas establishment in Manitoba [Canada]... our aim is to provide information about public processes that affect: Manitoba land and waters; decisions for use of crown (public) lands and water; technical information about these lands decisions and processes". The site is certainly a comprehensive resource - sections cover Protected Areas, Economic Development, Consultations/Legislation, Land Use Planning, Climate Change, Our Earth and Governments, often featuring what the site calls "hard to find government information, or documents that are no longer posted". Manitobawildlands.org also includes an up-to-date events listing, a 'Take Action Centre' for sending letters to decisionmakers, and an excellent page of links related to the site's themes. Visually, the site has few bells and whistles, but its content makes it a valuable and well-maintained resource. [GAS, 12 Sep 2005].

The National Trust
 http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/

Founded in 1895 by three Victorian philanthropists - Miss Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley - the National Trust now cares for over 248,000 hectares of countryside in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, plus almost 600 miles of coastline and more than 200 buildings and gardens of outstanding interest and importance. The Trust's website is vast - as well as details of all properties open to the public, there are sections covering (among other things) environment and conservation, holidays and travel, learning and discovery, policy and campaigns (with downloadable documents), and membership. The site also includes an excellent section of related links. The design of the site is attractive and logical, and a complete large text version is available for visually impaired users. Natural Burial Co-operative
 http://www.naturalburial.ca/

Launched in April 2006 and founded upon a co-operative business model that "honours conservation, sustainability and environmental and socially responsible business values", Canada's Natural Burial Co-operative is "committed to developing natural burial funeral services, products and memorials, which enhance, protect, and preserve our natural environment". By working to establish natural burial cemeteries across Canada, the Natural Burial Co-operative seeks to preserve green spaces and provide what it argues is "a dignified and environmentally responsive burial option". Providing a wealth of useful news and background information within a crisp and attractive interface, the site frames natural burial as "an environmentally sustainable funeral alternative that embraces the natural cycle of life. Rather than encouraging the unnecessary consumption of resources such as concrete vaults, metal caskets, and chemical preservation... a natural burial creates a living memorial using native trees, shrubs and plants. These living memorials then create living sanctuaries for friends and family to visit and connect with nature and each other". [GAS, 27 Aug 2006].

As its name suggests, Scottish Natural Heritage "works with Scotland's people to care for its natural heritage... promoting its care and improvement, its responsible enjoyment, its greater understanding and appreciation and its sustainable use, now and for future generations." SNH's website is quite attractively designed, and offers vast amounts of useful information, including coverage of news and events, policy and guidance documents, and publications, data and research. On the downside, the layout of the site is less intuitive than it used to be, with the rationale for having two separate horizontal menus not entirely clear. Equally, the loss of what used to be a very good links section is disappointing. Overall, however, this remains a valuable and enjoyable site. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

The Trust's website is very nicely designed, and has information about its work organised by state. Other features include details of publications, a newsroom and jobs listing.
