Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
CEBE is one of 24 Subject Centres which comprise part of the Higher Education Academy. According to its site, "the primary purpose of CEBE is to provide discipline based support for learning and teaching in the built environment subject communities of Architecture, Landscape, Urban Planning, Housing and Transport, Construction and Real Estate". Recently redesigned, CEBE's website is up-to-date and attractive, featuring news and events, subject and issue based materials for enhancing learning and teaching, projects and initiatives, and a useful publications section. Elsewhere, and excellent 'resources finder' provides a searchable directory of Internet sites for built environment academics, provided in association with the Resource Discovery Network. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Nov 2005].

This site sports a very attractive and modern design, and is easy to get around. It includes an introduction to the landscape profession; information about courses, research and staff; a news and events page (though not functioning at the time of Sapling's visit); and an excellent gallery featuring examples of student work. The 'information for students' section also includes a worthwhile page of landscape-related links. [GAS, 4 Oct 2005].

Landscape Design Courses is a UK-based information site regarding landscape design, and how to become a landscape designer. Neatly designed, the site provides what it calls "a checklist of crucial features that will help you distinguish the best design courses from the rest", together with an external link to a list of "landscape and garden design courses that have our full recommendation". It's a useful idea - but as with any site providing this kind of information, its advice would be more credible if we knew who was behind it. [GAS, 10 Sep 2005].

Based at Leeds Metropolitan University, the Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design has over 900 students studying full and part time with an academic and support staff of nearly 50. Originating as part of the Government School of Design in the 1850s, the School describes itself as "proud of this long tradition of creative endeavour"; today, it "builds on traditional practice and embraces new media and technologies". The site provides a basic introduction to the School, with some interesting news stories, and profiles of former students. Much of the useful content is hosted elsewhere, however, with links to dedicated sites for each of the School's subject areas (including Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Garden Art and Design, Environmental Design, Design, and Design Culture), while the School's research is also covered on a separate site. The Landscape Architecture programme at MMU seeks to offer students "an unrivalled opportunity to experience the teaching of landscape architecture within an art and design faculty, with its emphasis on creativity and transferable design skills". The site is neatly organised and attractively illustrated, with information about courses, research and the department's resources; staff profiles; reasonably up-to-date news and events; and examples of students' work. Formed by the merger of the Schools of Environment and Social Sciences, the University of Gloucestershire Department of Natural and Social Sciences "delivers a diverse range of study programmes in the areas of biology, community development, environmental science, geography, heritage management, landscape and garden design, psychology and sociology". Integrated visually and physically within the overall University site, the Department's pages do look and read rather like a prospectus, with the comprehensive staff profiles and up-to-date news section adding a much-needed richness. However, for a university department, the absence of a research section is unusual. [GAS, 10 May 2006].

This redesigned site offers information on academic programmes at the UT-Austin School of Architecture - as well as architecture, these include historic preservation, sustainable design, architectural history, urban design, community and regional planning, interior design and landscape architecture. Other sections provide information about staff, events, resources, and a useful research and publications section, featuring the online journal Planning Forum. The design of the site is reasonably attractive, though many of the deeper pages are inconsistent in their format; furthermore, the frequent use of images as internal links (with no text alternatives) is poor in terms of accessibility. According to the site's welcome page, the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design "offers rigorous programmes of study for the emerging architect, landscape architect or urban designer". The site has been completely redesigned using Flash, and looks, well, very flash... however, beneath the gloss there is a lot of good content here. The site is clearly organised, and has all the information you would expect about admissions, courses, programmes, events, together with a resources section and an impressive gallery of student work. The Flash - though attractively used - can slow things down though, and on a slower connection the constant 'loading' messages do begin to annoy. As always, an HTML alternative would be a worthwhile addition. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is a national professional society that represents the landscape architecture profession in the United States. The site is aimed both at professionals and the public, with sections covering information about ASLA, membership, products and services, news and publications, meetings and events, career resources, and government affairs. Key features include JobLink, described as "the premier online job listing service for the field of landscape architecture", and FirmFinder, a facility where the public can find details of ASLA-registered landscape architects. All together, this is a site which is attractive, well organised, and comprehensive in its coverage of landscape-related information. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 6 Nov 2005].

According to the site, "the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) is the premier cross-disciplinary organisation dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. US-based but with members in more than thirty countries, APT connects a network of architects, conservators, tradespeople, consultants, planners, curators, landscape architects, engineers, developers, educators, engineers, historians, apprentices and students". The site contains the information you would expect, including up-to-date details of publications, conferences, membership and local Chapters (branches), plus a useful 'Resources' section with reports, archives and a page of (mainly US and Canada-related) preservation links. The Association of Gardens Trusts is a UK national organisation representing the growing number of County Gardens Trusts that are actively engaged in conserving, researching, documenting and caring for the country's heritage of parks, gardens and designed landscapes. The site is a comprehensive resource, with sections covering (among other things) community activities, education, useful publications, and details of County Gardens Trusts. There is also an up-to-date events listing, and a helpful section of links to related organisations. The Countryside Agency (formed in 1999 from the merger of the Countryside Commission and Rural Development Commission) works to achieve the best for the English countryside through conservation, research, and influencing central and local government. Features of the Agency's site include an up-to-date 'press centre'; coverage of its work and projects, including the Landscape Access and Recreation and Commission for Rural Communities divisions; and details of publications. Recently redesigned, the site is quite attractive; however, the revised menu layout lacks the clarity of the old (Sapling Commendation-winning) site, its confusing format and choice of headings making it quite hard to locate specific information.
