Landscape at the University of Sheffield

This site sports a very attractive and modern design, and is easy to get around. It includes an introduction to the landscape profession; information about courses, research and staff; a news and events page (though not functioning at the time of Sapling's visit); and an excellent gallery featuring examples of student work. The 'information for students' section also includes a worthwhile page of landscape-related links. [GAS, 4 Oct 2005].

Landscape Design Courses

http://www.landscape-design-courses.com/

Landscape Design Courses is a UK-based information site regarding landscape design, and how to become a landscape designer. Neatly designed, the site provides what it calls "a checklist of crucial features that will help you distinguish the best design courses from the rest", together with an external link to a list of "landscape and garden design courses that have our full recommendation". It's a useful idea - but as with any site providing this kind of information, its advice would be more credible if we knew who was behind it. [GAS, 10 Sep 2005].

Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design

http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/as/ald/

Based at Leeds Metropolitan University, the Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design has over 900 students studying full and part time with an academic and support staff of nearly 50. Originating as part of the Government School of Design in the 1850s, the School describes itself as "proud of this long tradition of creative endeavour"; today, it "builds on traditional practice and embraces new media and technologies". The site provides a basic introduction to the School, with some interesting news stories, and profiles of former students. Much of the useful content is hosted elsewhere, however, with links to dedicated sites for each of the School's subject areas (including Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Garden Art and Design, Environmental Design, Design, and Design Culture), while the School's research is also covered on a separate site. Formed by the merger of the Schools of Environment and Social Sciences, the University of Gloucestershire Department of Natural and Social Sciences "delivers a diverse range of study programmes in the areas of biology, community development, environmental science, geography, heritage management, landscape and garden design, psychology and sociology". Integrated visually and physically within the overall University site, the Department's pages do look and read rather like a prospectus, with the comprehensive staff profiles and up-to-date news section adding a much-needed richness. This redesigned site offers information on academic programmes at the UT-Austin School of Architecture - as well as architecture, these include historic preservation, sustainable design, architectural history, urban design, community and regional planning, interior design and landscape architecture. Other sections provide information about staff, events, resources, and a useful research and publications section, featuring the online journal Planning Forum. The design of the site is reasonably attractive, though many of the deeper pages are inconsistent in their format; furthermore, the frequent use of images as internal links (with no text alternatives) is poor in terms of accessibility. University of Toronto: Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design

According to the site's welcome page, the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design "offers rigorous programmes of study for the emerging architect, landscape architect or urban designer". The site has been completely redesigned using Flash, and looks, well, very flash... however, beneath the gloss there is a lot of good content here. The site is clearly organised, and has all the information you would expect about admissions, courses, programmes, events, together with a resources section and an impressive gallery of student work. The Flash - though attractively used - can slow things down though, and on a slower connection the constant 'loading' messages do begin to annoy. The Flower Council of Holland

http://www.flowercouncil.org/uk/

The Flower Council of Holland is the worldwide marketing arm of the cut flower and houseplant industry of the Netherlands. This is big business, as in the UK alone the cut flower market is worth a staggering 2.2 billion (the UK music industry is only worth 2 billion). The Flower Council is financed by a mandatory levy to which all sectors of the trade in Holland contribute. The site's content is primarily aimed at the international floral industry (florists, garden centres, supermarkets, plant retailers and wholesalers, DIYers, etc.) and horticultural media, but the trends illustrated also have an impact on the wider fields of garden design and landscaping. The site actually has a lot of useful and interesting content, which is hidden away due to the poor navigational structure; however, if you use the sitemap then all will be revealed. Sections cover Cultivation, Logistics, Facts & Figures (archived by year), News & Newsletters, Fashions & Trends (archived by year), and Promotional Ideas & Techniques. All in all it’s a very slick multi billion pound Dutch industry that dictates trends and fashions to the world. [RB, 25 Aug 2006].

The National Trust

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/

Founded in 1895 by three Victorian philanthropists - Miss Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley - the National Trust now cares for over 248,000 hectares of countryside in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, plus almost 600 miles of coastline and more than 200 buildings and gardens of outstanding interest and importance. The Trust's website is vast - as well as details of all properties open to the public, there are sections covering (among other things) environment and conservation, holidays and travel, learning and discovery, policy and campaigns (with downloadable documents), and membership. The site also includes an excellent section of related links. The design of the site is attractive and logical, and a complete large text version is available for visually impaired users. An impressive site, awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Nov 2007].

Natural Burial Co-operative

http://www.naturalburial.ca/

Launched in April 2006 and founded upon a co-operative business model that "honours conservation, sustainability and environmental and socially responsible business values", Canada's Natural Burial Co-operative is "committed to developing natural burial funeral services, products and memorials, which enhance, protect, and preserve our natural environment". By working to establish natural burial cemeteries across Canada, the Natural Burial Co-operative seeks to preserve green spaces and provide what it argues is "a dignified and environmentally responsive burial option". Providing a wealth of useful news and background information within a crisp and attractive interface, the site frames natural burial as "an environmentally sustainable funeral alternative that embraces the natural cycle of life. Rather than encouraging the unnecessary consumption of resources such as concrete vaults, metal caskets, and chemical preservation… a natural burial creates a living memorial using native trees, shrubs and plants. These living memorials then create living sanctuaries for friends and family to visit and connect with nature and each other". [GAS, 27 Aug 2006].

Scottish Natural Heritage

http://www.snh.org.uk/

As its name suggests, Scottish Natural Heritage "works with Scotland's people to care for its natural heritage... promoting its care and improvement, its responsible enjoyment, its greater understanding and appreciation and its sustainable use, now and for future generations." SNH's website is quite attractively designed, and offers vast amounts of useful information, including coverage of news and events, policy and guidance documents, and publications, data and research. On the downside, the layout of the site is less intuitive than it used to be, with the rationale for having two separate horizontal menus not entirely clear. Equally, the loss of what used to be a very good links section is disappointing. Overall, however, this remains a valuable and enjoyable site. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

This site, by Sapling Editor, Graham Soult, concerns itself with Ashdell, a listed Victorian villa in the Sheffield suburb of Broomhill. In the late 1990s, Ashdell's garden and other nearby greenspaces were at risk of being sold for housing development. This site provides an archive of the successful campaign to prevent this development, and addresses the many planning issues raised by the proposals. The site also features a number of good quality photographs of Ashdell and its garden. [GAS, 11 Oct 2006].

Glasgow Parks - Landscape & Architecture

http://www.glasgowparks.webeden.co.uk/

Created by Susan Gallagher, this site is born from what she describes as her "love of Glasgow's parks and in particular the abundance of architectural details, especially those less noticable or hidden features". The site sets out to celebrate some of the lesser known landscape details and architectural marvels found in parks such as Pollok and Rouken Glen, and is beautifully designed with lots of good quality photographs. Explanatory text is a little thin on the ground, but hopefully more written content will be added as the site continues to grow. [GAS, 11 Oct 2006].

Judy Woods - Save Our Heritage Site

http://www.judywoods.dial.pipex.com/

Judy Woods - a place not a person - is a 40 hectare area of woodland in Bradford and adjoining Calderdale, which local campaigners are trying to get nominated as a local nature reserve. According to the site, its purpose "is to let people know about our campaign group who are fighting to protect and preserve our land and heritage not just for now but for future generations", featuring vast amounts of information and argument. Copiously illustrated sections cover the background and history of Judy Woods, public rights of way, the area's wide diversity of wildlife (mushrooms and fungi, butterflies and moths, mammals, trees, insects, spiders, beetles, birds, and amphibians and molluscs), forthcoming events, and proposed developments that the campaigners believe will impact upon the woods. An excellent links page is also provided. On the downside, the site uses the dreaded combination of yellow and green text on a black background, but this only slightly detracts from what is a highly impressive effort overall. Buildingconservation.com

http://www.buildingconservation.com/

Designed and maintained by Wiltshire-based Cathedral Communications Limited, buildingconservation.com is described as "the online information centre for the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, churches and garden landscapes", drawing its content from The Building Conservation Directory, Historic Churches and Historic Gardens. The site includes an excellent collection of essential articles by leading experts; a products and services directory, listing suppliers of products, specialist consultants, specialist contractors and craftsmen, as well as advisory bodies and organisations; a building conservation bookshop, conveniently organised by subject; and up-to-date coverage of events and courses. Designguide.com

http://www.designguide.com/

Newly launched in 2004, Designguide "is dedicated to providing the design and construction industry with the most comprehensive and efficient directory for professionals, products and online resources". Users can browse the site's content by category ('professionals', 'products' or 'links') or use the convenient search tool. When it launched, the site described its interface as "a sophisticated online environment built on imagery, speed and simplicity", and it certainly is unusual to see construction-related content presented within an architectural aesthetic. It all looks very professional indeed, with a recent redesign tweaking the category headings to better articulate the site's undoubted value as a resource. [GAS, 15 Sep 2006].

Dexigner Design Portal

http://www.dexigner.com/

Dexigner is set-up as a large portal for the design industry, featuring databases, news, events, designers, design companies and feeds, and including design topics from 3D to floral to lighting to transport. At the moment some section are sparse, but Dexigner could develop into a comprehensive design resource. The website is fairly well designed though navigation is a little complex; however, like any large website it will take time to become familiar with the layout. [RB, 7 Nov 2006].

ELAN - European Landscape Architecture Network

ELAN was set up in 1995 by a group of former landscape architecture students involved with ELASA (European Landscape Architecture Students Association), to carry forward the spirit of co-operation they had experienced beyond the student world. It therefore still features details of the "forthcoming" ELAN 2005 meeting in Croatia are provided, plus information on the ELAN-L mailing list, described as "an opportunity to share ideas, ask questions and provide information, on any topics related to European landscape architecture". Essential British Gardens

http://www.gardenarena.co.uk/

Essential British Gardens is a well-maintained digest of some of the finest gardens and arboretums throughout Britain. Entries can be browsed by region, although the definition (South Central England, anyone?) and articulation (North Lincolnshire is part of 'North East England', for example) of the regions is rather bizarre - it would be better just to stick to the standard UK regions used by everyone else. However, a search facility is also provided, so finding the garden you want is not too complex. Some of the descriptions are more full than others, but many of the entries do have useful links to related websites, photographs, or other information provided elsewhere. [GAS, 11 Oct 2006].

Europe Photos: Pictures of European and Mediterranean Towns and Landscapes

http://www.euratlas.com/europe_photos/

Part of the Swiss business Euratlas, Europe Photos lives up to its name by presenting more than 500 high resolution pictures of European and Mediterranean cities, landscapes, islands and landmarks; these can be freely used as long as the discreet 'euratlas' logo included in each photo remains in place. Places covered include Armenia, Austria, Brussels, the Nile Valley and Red Sea in Egypt, Northern and Southern France, Georgia, Northern and Southern Germany, Greece and the Greek Islands, Hungary, Northern and Southern Italy, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine. With its particularly strong coverage of lesser known east European countries, Europe Photos is undoubtedly an interesting and useful resource. However, while certain images are of excellent quality - notably some of the Swiss and Italian pictures - others are rather disappointing in terms of their composition, colours, clarity or lighting. Gardenvisit.com Gardens Guide

http://www.gardenvisit.com/

The Gardenvisit.com Gardens Guide reviews places of interest to gardeners: properties open to the public, historic estates, botanic collections, websites, hotels, design studios, nurseries and product suppliers. It describes 1000 parks and gardens open to the public in Europe and America, organised by country and (in the UK) by county, with useful information such as opening times, although it is not clear whether this information is up-to-date. This site is impressive in its coverage - there is a section of diagrams covering different historic styles of garden design, with links to examples of gardens influenced by that style; a history of garden design; and an index of garden designers. On the downside, the site's design is dating really badly, and the quality of images is poor. Gardenvisit.com remains a useful site for garden historians and garden visitors alike, but an improved appearance and interface would help do full justice to its impressive content.
